AVIAN INFLUENZA – FREE RANGE HENS
As you may be aware, since the 7th November 2022, all free range hens have been kept in their houses, to protect them from avian influenza, which is spread by migrating wild birds.
As the twelve week anniversary of this date approaches from 1st February 2023 it is a legal requirement that all eggs produced by these free range hens are marked, packed and sold as barn eggs.
Over the course of the next few weeks you will see your free range eggs stamped with the barn egg code (2-UK rather than 1-UK). The free range packs will have a special label attached to them stating that the eggs in the packs are “laid by hens temporarily housed in barns for their welfare”.
This will continue until such time that the hens are legally permitted to be free to roam. They are being housed as a legal requirement for their own protection and well being.
